Security Must Be Considered By Religious Web Sites

Web site security is not an option for religious organizations, according to Internet consultants. Among the steps that religious sites ought to consider, according to the experts, are:

  • Make sure to choose a web server company that provides professional service and basic backup and security;

  • Back up everything you post and keep your backups in another location than your web server;

  • Don't use obvious passwords, and change them regularly. Avoid using the names of famous religious leaders or saints as passwords, and don't store passwords on the site.

  • Use passwords that are combinations of numbers and letters. A common program used by hackers runs words from large dictionaries against a site until one matches.

  • Although Internet traffic in general drops during the Christmas holidays, in previous years, hacker intrusions have skyrocketed. Have someone monitor the web site -- at least several times a week -- particularly during long holidays.

  • Develop a security policy, which may need to include packet filtering and effective firewall techniques.
