by Max Lucado Hardcover Reader Review: Angels take a bow. Enjoyable and well written, but lacks the reality and insight of "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years". Max Lucado has clearly done his research and presented a wonderful traditional view of our Lord. If you do not enjoy being challenged as you read - with regard to accepted doctrine - then this is definitely the book for you. Lovingly presented and skillfully written. I look forward to seeing more books from this author. List: $19.99 -- Our Price: $13.99 -- You Save: $6.00 (30%)
by Joan Wester Anderson Review From Booklist, 10/01/94: Anderson has accumulated these angel stories from a variety of sources, from written accounts and from oral narratives. The stories of children's encounters with angels suggest that these incidents happen under the most ordinary circumstances, as when an angel appears at a school play, or over an infant's crib, or to a troubled student in a library. The miraculous encounters include a surfing angel who pulls a child from deep water and then disappears. Many of the stories close with a moralistic message from Anderson or a biblical quote. Poems, songs, and other angelic messages dot the text along with sweet drawings. Copyright © 1994, American Library Association. All rights reserved. by Paul William Roberts Hardcover, 384 pages Synopsis: Almost no one agrees on who came to that stable in Bethlehem two thousand years ago, how many came, where they came from, whether they were sages or kings, and what they gave to the special child. To unravel this mystery, the author travels from Israel to Iran and the legacy of ancient Persia, creating a beautiful, interlocking mosaic of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. From Booklist : What a valuable book! At the very least, it is an engaging travelogue, and Roberts' account of his journey through Iran, Iraq, and Syria to retrace the steps of the magi will easily hold an audience from beginning to end. But, more than travelogue, it is a provocative invitation to reexamine the Zoroastrian background of Christianity, providing an occasion for serious reflection on the intersection of religion and politics in one of the most troubled regions on the planet. The recent assassination of Yitzhak Rabin makes the discussion of the 1994 Hebron massacre in the epilogue especially poignant; but it is likely to retain its impact even when memories of such tragic events are not so immediate. by James P. Carse Hardcover, 160 pages Book Description: In this literary and religious tour de force, Carse daringly revives the ancient tradition of writing gospels to communicate the contemporary meaning of Jesus' life and teaching. This tradition resulted in dozens of gospels, such as the Gospel of Thomas, but died out when the Church closed the New Testament with its four official or "canonical" Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This, then, is the first full, all-new gospel in 1,500 years. It is not yet another novel about Jesus, such as those by Nikos Kazantzakis and Norman Mailer, nor is it is a harmonizing of the traditional gospels, like those by Leo Tolstoy and Reynolds Price. As James Carse says, in introducing readers to this gospel, "What is needed, now as before, is imagination, but imagination that takes no more liberty with the known historical material than the earlier gospels themselves took.... Each [evangelist] wrote a gospel grounded in the time of Jesus and his own time. Why should we do less?" The book's prologue dramatically sets the stage by telling how, long after Jesus' death, some of his followers bring an old woman a parchment scroll on which they have painstakingly assembled Jesus' story, piercing together what they remember of him. They come to her because, as "the one Jesus loved," she knew him best. She listens carefully to their "gospel" and, when they are through, tersely responds that "it wasn't like that....There is too much to say to end it here."
And thus begins her gospel, the first full gospel from a woman's point of view. She recounts many of the events of Jesus' life that we know from the New Testament gospels -- such as his birth, baptism, transfiguration, trial and crucifixation -- but in a very different and fully credible way. What her gospel brings is her perspective as his most intimate companion; she knew Jesus better than anyone else and wants to tell his story as she really experienced it, not to mythologize him or advance some Church agenda. Perhaps most arresting is her gospel's vivid presentation of Jesus' trenchant exchanges with the people he encounters and its many delightful and though-provoking parables.

by Hank Hanegraaff In this controversial book, the president of the Christian Research Institute reveals what he says is the truth behind today's counterfeit revivals. Hank Hanegraaff steps to the forefront in the discussion on today's most visible -- and controversial -- revival movements. A critical review in the July 1997 issue of Charisma charges that the author's conclusions "are weak, and his conclusions are outrageous."
by David Rosenberg (Editor) Unlike any other stories in our culture, those in the book of Genesis confront us with provoking scenes of love and death, stark allegiances and subtle betrayals. At first glance, these narratives may seem straightforward, but as we reread and delve more deeply into them they begin to resonate with new meaning and they force us to reexamine our understanding of the social, ethical, and political landscape in which we live. But in the beginning were the writers of the stories. Over the centuries, the morals and meanings that traditional readings have attached to the stories of Genesis effectively obscured the contemporary culture that produced them. Even experts and commentators have tended to miss the point: they all agree that Genesis is special, but the question of why the book was written has never properly addressed. Now, for the first time, 20 of our leading literary lights - novelists, poets, dramatists, and essayists - turn their attention to a particular story in Genesis and comment on it from the perspective of the storyteller. Together, they begin to discover the imaginative sensibilities of the ancient writer, as the very motivations of the biblical authors and their characters come to light. The result is a stunningly realized literary collection that will forever change they way you read the Bible's first stories.
